References to Copilot and File Explorer have been observed in code, hinting at Microsoft’s upcoming developments, although details about their intentions remain unclear.

Microsoft is determined to bring AI to a wider audience, focusing significantly on its Copilot feature, which is already integrated into Microsoft Edge, Windows 11, and Microsoft 365. Recent insights from user PhantomOcean3 indicate that Microsoft is developing a connection between Copilot and Windows’ File Explorer.

The specifics of this feature are not yet clear, but it suggests Microsoft’s intent to enhance Copilot’s accessibility across different Windows interfaces. Currently, users can access Copilot from the taskbar.

There’s speculation that this integration might enable users to directly send files to Copilot via a context menu shortcut. Given that Windows 11 displays varied context menus based on the file type, adding a “send to Copilot” option seems like a logical extension for file management.

The current preview version of Copilot on Windows remains fairly restricted, primarily serving as a direct link to Copilot with Bing Chat (previously named “Bing Chat”). While it offers certain Windows integrations like enabling dark mode, Copilot is far from realizing a futuristic AI vision deeply integrated into your PC experience.

PhantomOcean3 also posted screenshots of this feature. Although released concurrently with the File Explorer-Copilot integration, the Copilot suggestions function is distinct. Users have the option to activate Copilot suggestions independently of the CopilotFEContextMenu feature.

Microsoft Copilot

I was taken aback by the backlash against Microsoft’s introduction of a Copilot key on Windows PCs. Personally, since I don’t use the key it’s replacing, I hadn’t given it much thought. However, there’s been notable discontent expressed online regarding this change.

Criticism mostly revolves around the perception of Microsoft imposing AI on users rather than simply replacing a keyboard key. As Copilot entry points become more prevalent across Microsoft software and hardware, some view this as Microsoft’s aggressive promotion of AI technology.

I don’t believe Microsoft is forcing AI usage, but many users might encounter AI prompts more frequently than they prefer, leading to annoyance. While I may have become more tolerant with age, I find it hard to relate to the level of discontent seen in certain Reddit discussions about the Copilot button. For those interested, checking the controversial section there might reveal passionate arguments against the button’s implementation.
