Those days are long gone, as engineers have shattered the 420M Mbps internet speed record, achieving an astonishing data transmission rate of 402 Tbps using standard fiber optic cables. This breakthrough not only surpasses the previous 420M Mbps internet speed record but also demonstrates speeds so incredible that you could download massive games like Baldur’s Gate 3, Red Dead Redemption 2, and the entire Fallout 4 collection in less than a tenth of a second. The evolution from dial-up to DSL once seemed revolutionary, but this latest achievement makes even those advancements pale in comparison, ushering in a new era of lightning-fast internet connectivity.

Japan’s National Institute of Information and Communications Technology (NICT) has shattered the 420M Mbps internet speed record, achieving an astonishing 402 Tbps or 50.25 TB/s. This groundbreaking feat, which surpasses the previous 420M Mbps internet speed record by approximately 25%, utilized 50 km of commercially available optical fibres and signal amplifiers.

The backbone of global internet infrastructure relies on optical fibres, transmitting digital information through modulated infrared, light, and ultraviolet signals. NICT’s achievement in breaking the 420M Mbps internet speed record involved maximizing transmission bands and employing cutting-edge amplifiers and gain equalisers. This resulted in a total signal bandwidth of 37.6 THz, over 100,000 times greater than WiFi 7’s capabilities, demonstrating the immense potential for future internet speeds.

While the 420M Mbps internet speed record is impressive, it’s far from becoming a reality for home broadband connections. The cost of achieving such speeds is prohibitively expensive for general users. However, this 420M Mbps internet speed record is of great interest to the industry, given the ever-increasing demand for high-speed data transmission.

Hypothetically, if you could have such a blazing-fast connection at home, you might think you could download multiple 150 GB games in less than a second. Unfortunately, that’s not the case due to various bottlenecks in even the most advanced gaming PCs, starting with the Ethernet port limitations.

High-end motherboards may feature a 10GbE or 10 Gbps Ethernet port, but this is still approximately 40,000 times slower than the recent speed achievements. Even if you could overcome this hurdle and the PCH bus bottleneck, you’d face limitations from your PC’s RAM or SSD write speeds.

While a top-tier gaming rig can easily handle a 1 Gbps home fiber connection, it’s simply not equipped to manage speeds approaching 412,000 Gbps. The gap between theoretical internet speeds and practical hardware capabilities remains vast, highlighting the ongoing need for technological advancements across the entire computing ecosystem.

While we haven’t reached the 420M Mbps internet speed record yet, it’s fascinating to consider how far we’ve come. A gaming PC from the 56k dial-up era would be overwhelmed by today’s broadband speeds, let alone the 420M Mbps internet speed record. In a few decades, we might find ourselves complaining about our 400 Tbps ultra-broadband, much like how we now view the once-impressive 56k modems.

It’s worth noting that as internet speeds continue to break records, game sizes are also expanding. By the time we surpass the current 420M Mbps internet speed record, games may well exceed 150 GB in size. This constant evolution in both network capabilities and software demands highlights an interesting paradox in PC technology: sometimes, progress doesn’t always feel like progress.
